Birthdays Come But Once A Year [RP]
Who: Mikel Fury, Loki Laufeyson, Carlos Ayala (Marvel NPC)
When: Between Event Horizon and Hellfire
Where: Mikel's house
Rating: PG-13 (language, general adult themes mentioned)
Thread is Closed.
There were many different things one could wake up to on their birthday—some pleasant, some not so pleasant. This was quickly falling into the not so pleasant category. Startled awake by a sound that did not belong in his bedroom, Mikel Fury realized three things in quick succession; first, that he had one serious hangover in progress; second, that he was not alone in his bed; and third, that the noise he was hearing was someone singing. By the time he figured out who was doing the singing and who was in the bed with him, it was too late to stop things and Mikel’s first coherent thought of the day was, ‘This will not end well.’
Carlos Ayala’s first though wasn’t quite as coherent as Mikel’s. Actually, he wasn’t thinking at all when Mikel’s sudden movement snapped him into consciousness. Mentally grabbing the first thing in his line of sight, Carlos waved his arm and telekinetically chucked whatever it was at the noisy intruder standing at the end of the bed before rolling over to see what was going on.
Knowing what he did of Mikel’s background, Carlos was prepared to see just about anything standing there armed to the teeth—but a tall long haired guy dressed in a little polka-dot dress with a party hat on his head with a dog dressed in a similar fashion completely shut Carlos’s brain down for a second. The fact he had tossed a dog toy at the guy’s head and said toy was now floating in place without any help from him took a few seconds longer to register.
“What the hell were we drinking last night?” he asked Mikel as he stared at the guy.
Mikel had dropped back onto the bed once he’d confirmed that it was Loki and Tinkerbell down there and not some alcohol induced hallucination. Well, he thought, at least Carlos and I are still dressed though I'm sure that won't stop Loki from jumping to conclusions here.
“You picked the bar,” Mikel muttered as he rubbed the heels of his hands against his eyes, “you tell me.”

When Loki waved his hand and the pain eased away, Mikel found it easier to smile at the god. Surprise crossed over Carlos's face and he focused on Loki. Grinning, he said, "You are now my best friend for life, sir." Looking down, Carlos picked up the toy and tossed it. "Go get it, girl!"
Instead of going after it, Tinkerbell sat down and gave Carlos a look. Mikel shook his head-- easier to do now that it didn't feel like his brain was going to fall out-- when Carlos gave him a questioning look. "You didn't throw it the same way as before." Carlos thought about that a second, then held out his hand and sent the toy flying to another spot in the room. That got Tinkerbell barking in delight and she jumped off the bed and chased after the toy.
When Loki asked if they were up for some cookie cake for breakfast, Mikel's stomach answered for him. "That does sound good right now. Tea as well." Taking the cookie from Loki and leading the way to the kitchen, Mikel said, "And I think I'd prefer dinner with just the family tonight if that's all right." Actually he didn't mind Bruce being there, it was thought of Mike being there and having Carlos introduced as his significant other that filled him with a sense of horror. When he saw the glittering halo around Loki start to dim Mikel sighed mentally and added, "Though I suppose it would be nice to see everyone now that things have settled down for a bit."
As he went to set the cookie cake on the table in the breakfast nook, he had to pause and then lift it out of the way as a doggy toy shot by, followed by a fuzzy blur that sailed up and over the table. There was a thunk then a surprised woof as Mikel set the cake down. Carlos looked a touch embarrassed as he walked past and picked a slightly stunned Tinkerbell off the floor. "Sorry about that," he said as he walked over to the table and dropped into a chair. "Didn't realized there was a wall there." After letting Tinkerbell get settled, Carlos asked, "Who's Bruce and Mike?"
"Bruce Banner and Michael Jon Carter."
It took Carlos a few seconds to place Mike's name. "As in Booster Gold?" He grinned knowingly at Mikel when Mikel made a face and nodded in agreement. "Oh, I bet you two get along like oil on water, huh?"

"Not oil and water, Carlos- more like oil and vinegar. As in, DELICIOUSLY. Mikel and Mike are special awesome guys and I love them both lots and they taste good on salads and on sandwiches....?" Loki paused, his metaphor running away from him, then shrugged. He fussed over Mikel and Carlos, preparing their tea with extra cream and extra sugar and honey and cinnamon sprinkled over it because that's how he likes his tea and he can't imagine someone not wanting to die of diabetic shock this early in the morning.
He prepared a little dish of cream for Tinkerbell and let her curl up in his lap after she drank it, snuggling against his midsection.
"So, Carlos, what do you do for a living? Oh, is it okay that I asked? I'm just curious about what you like to do with your time," he added anxiously, looking suddenly worried. "You're not a spy, are you? I mean the kind of spy who is in a different spy organization than Mikel. Oh gosh, you're not, are you? How tragic! Love across a battlefield, set upon by both sides, cruel fate trapping you on either side of a political firing line!"
Loki actually started crying into Tinkerbell's fur at that, the confused pooch giving Mikel and Carlos a somewhat reproachful look for causing this outrage.

After taking a cautious sip-- goodbye hangover, hello sugar buzz-- Mikel got up and pulled out a knife to cut the cake with as Loki sat down to talk to Carlos. He bit back a smile at the guesses Loki was making and the look of complete confusion on Carlos's face. Loki did take a bit of getting used to.
Cutting the cake and setting a piece in front of Loki, hoping that might distract him a bit, Mikel decided to get back at Carlos for the hangover and said, "No, he's not a spy though you could kind say he is from the other side of the battlefield."

"Trust me, Carlos, Mikel's dad is going to be like a scarier, smarter, devious-er version of Robert DeNiro from Meet the Parents- my best advice to you, right now, would be to quickly get over onto the side of law and order so that Nick doesn't tie you up in our basement and interrogate you for days about your intentions towards his son." Loki smooched the top of Carlos's head, smoothing his hair back before sitting back down to dig into his cookie cake and tea. Tinkerbell gave Carlos the most serious, mournful expression she could muster.
"So, my sweet. How's work going? Because if they're not giving you enough time off I will have a word with your boss," Loki added primly.

"You're not drunk and yes that really just happened."
"Ah." He gave the cake a look. "It's going to be like that at dinner too, isn't it?"
"Oh, I expect so," Mikel answered as he held out a fork for Carlos to take. Once Carlos started moving again, Mikel sat down and started on his own piece. Because it was there, he decided to dip a chunk of cake into the tea. Wasn't too bad. Looking up when Loki asked about work, Mikel shook his head.
"Actually he's given me a little too much time off since that whole mess in the Middle East." He rolled his eyes in exasperation. "I'd say dad's being a little overprotective at the moment."
"Yeah, well can you blame him? You did end up in the hospital again," Carlos pointed out. "Was beginning to think we'd have to postpone the traditional birthday bar hop again this year." He looked down and stabbed a piece of cake. "It's no fun doing that by myself."
Mikel nudged him with his elbow. "I was just in for observation. I've had worse than that over the years. Hell, you've done worse to me than that."
Carlos laughed and gave him a sideways look. "This is true," he said with a smile. Mikel snorted in amusement and grinned back.

"No such thing as overprotective when it comes to your children, lovey," he told Mikel, still grinning. "You can be underprotective or just protective enough." Standing, Loki put his plate and cup in Mikel's sink, before bending down to scoop Tinkerbell into his arms.
"Can't stay any longer, sweetiepie, I have to get going on dinner. Oh, and Jake made you a present, but I've been sworn to secrecy not to tell you what it is," Loki added, smooching Mikel and Carlos on both cheeks, because he saw someone do that in a movie and has decided to adopt it as a charming new custom. "Love you, see you tonight, kay?"
At this point, Loki left the way he came- in a sparkle of light and sound.
